Emma Annie Roberts was born on 13th May 1831 and baptised the following month at Chesterfield in Derbyshire, daughter of Anne Roberts, formerly Barker, and her husband John Wall Roberts, a mercer and smock and frock manufacturer. The 1841 census finds Emma living with her father, siblings and two servants on Holywell Street in Chesterfield; her mother appears to have been away from home on census night.

Emma's parents died in quick succession in 1844, when Emma was only thirteen years old. Emma's father died on 16th August 1844 in Chesterfield, and her mother died on 22nd September 1844 at Matlock Bath.

By the time of the 1851 census, Emma was working as a governess in the household of Joseph Hamilton Beattie, who was locomotive engineer for the London and South Western Railway. They lived at 11 Lawn Place in Lambeth, in the southern suburbs of London.

On 31st March 1853, aged 21, Emma married Augustus Frederick Timothy, a wharfinger (harbourmaster) from London. They married back in her native Chesterfield, and three of the four witnesses to their marriage appear to have all been Emma's siblings.

By 1854 Emma had returned to the London area. On 24th March 1854 Emma was baptised again, alongside her brother James and sister Mary at St James's church in Bermondsey.

Emma and Augustus had one child, a boy called Percy Augustus born in the Bermondsey area in 1857. The 1861 census finds Augustus and a cook living at 2 Kidbrooke Cottages in Kidbrooke in Kent, in the south-eastern suburbs of London. Emma and her son Percy were not at home on census night; they were staying with Emma's sisters back in Chesterfield.

Emma returned to Kidbrooke. She died at home at Kidbrooke Cottage on 2nd January 1864, aged 32. She was buried back in Chesterfield six days later. Augustus survived her by seventeen years and remarried in 1865.

Baptised alongside sister Mary Elizabeth and brother James. As Emma's first baptism had been on 3rd June 1831, it is considered the date of birth quoted must be wrong. It is assumed that the day and month are accurate but the year incorrect.
