Emily Relf was born on 22nd July 1858 at Chart Sutton in Kent, daughter of Emily Relf, formerly Norris, and her husband John Relf, a farm labourer. Young Emily appears in the 1861 census living with her parents and younger sister in Chart Sutton. She was still there in 1871, although living with her maternal grandparents.
By 1881, Emily was working as a servant at Penge in the southern suburbs of London.
In 1882, aged 24, Emily was married at West Farleigh in Kent to James Singleton. At the time of their marriage he was living at Sydenham, not far from Penge where Emily had been working the previous year. They initially lived in Sydenham after their marriage, having a daughter called Emily Ethel there in 1883 and a daughter called Mabel Ada there in 1889.
By 1891 they had moved to Kensington in London's western suburbs. They lived at 25 Astwood Mews, where they stayed for over ten years, still being there in the 1901 census. They had a son called Robert in Kensington in 1892 and a son called Edward there in 1901. Whilst living there James worked as a coachman and groom.
Some time between 1901 and 1911 the family moved to Fulham, where they ran a confectionery and tobacconist's shop at 157 Munster Road.
James died in 1928, aged 70. Emily survived him by nearly 27 years. At the outbreak of the Second World War she was living with her daughter Mabel at 15 Ringmer Avenue in Fulham, just round the corner from Munster Road.
Emily died in Chelsea in 1954, aged 96.
