Emanuel Stern began his career when he was permitted by local government authorities in Fulda to open a retail clothing store. In those years, Jews could not engage in any trade of profession they wanted to, but had to apply for permits from the government to do so. As a matter of fact, few Jews were allowed to engage in professions such as lawyers, doctors or scientists, nor were they allowed to own land for many years, and were therefore confined to making a living by peddling, trading or money lending. Emanuel Stern's retail store prospered handsomely as in those years men's clothing were not manufactured but rather sold on a custom-made basis to each customer. Emanuel Stern's clothing store, being located in the township of Fulda, counted among its clientele many of the Catholic priests who wore special ecclesiatical clothes an thus needed custom made clothing.

The township of Fulda, historically and today, is a center of Catholic activity in Germany inasmuch as the Catholic Saint, Saint Boniface, is buried there. In spite of Emanuel Stern's tremendous success as a retailer of custom-made clothing, he changed businesses, and established a small paint factory in Fulda which survived as a viable business. It was taken over, without compensation, when the Nazis assumed power, as were all other businesses of that tragic era, and nothing is left of that business today.
