Instantly killed near Chauncey Wednesday Morning
Chauncey, Jan 29- Elmer Martin, aged 19, was struck by the north bound Hocking Valley passenger train this morning Coe’s crossing near here, and instantly killed. He was employed in the mines here and was on his way to work. When he reached Coe’s crossing, where there are two tracks, he stopped for a moment, and it is believed that he was watching a train on the other track and did not notice the rapidly approaching passenger train. Engineer Francis did not observe Martin until too late to stop his train and the unfortunate young man was struck and hurled several feet and killed instantly. Though his face was badly bruised, he was not mutilated.
As soon as possible the train was stopped and the lifeless body of the young man was carried to the depot. Because of the blood and bruises on his face he was not recognized until his name on a pay envelope. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Martin of Beaumont where the body was taken. Funeral services will be held tomorrow.
