Ellis1 Callender was born probably in England between 1639 and 1641, and he died in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, 18 May 1728, aged 87 years (Register, 18[1864]:290). He married, first, Mary _____, who died by 1719, and perhaps before 23 October 1717, when the Boston Selectmen gave Mr. Elias Callender liberty "to make a Vault in the Old burying place in the Spot of ground where his relations are buryed Provided no Monument above ground over the Same be there raised" (Records of the Selectmen of Boston 1716-1736, Thirteenth Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston [Boston, 1885] :28). He married, second, at Boston, with Rev. Dr. Increase Mather officiating, 17 November 1719, Abigail (Wigglesworth) Sweetser (A Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston, Containing the Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1751, (Boston, 1898] (hereinafter BRC 28), 80, in which Abigail is called Mary), widow of Benjamin Sweetser, an early Baptist who died 22 July 1718, aged 86, and daughter of Edward Wigglesworth of New Haven, Connecticut (Register, 18:290). By her first marriage, she had a son Wigglesworth Sweetser. Ellis married, third, at Boston, 22 May 1722, with his son Mr. Elisha Callender officiating, Elizabeth Eddy (BRC 25:105), who died there 10 November 1726, at age 77 (Register, 18:290).
