Ellen Wale was born on 28th August 1888 in Coventry, daughter of Phoebe Hannah Wale, formerly Pepper, and her husband John Wale, a machinist. The 1891 and 1901 censuses find Ellen living with her parents and siblings in court houses in Coventry.
In 1909, aged 20, she married George William Mitchell, an engineer and fitter in Coventry's cycle manufacturing industry. He was originally from Warwick but who had lived in Coventry from his childhood. Two days after her 21st birthday, Ellen had a son, Alfred John Mitchell. In the 1911 census the family was living in two rooms at Court 19, 9 Gosford Street, Coventry.
Ellen died in 1915, aged 27, leaving George William with a six year old son to look after. George subsequently remarried two years later and went on to have another four sons with his second wife.
