Elkanah Billing : ye son of Ebenezer Billing and Hannah his wife was borne ye [blank] day of January 1698.
[Note: This is recorded between other births on 28 May 1698 and 24 Jun 1698, but the record itself clearly says January with the whole month spelled out. It appears unlikely that it could mean Jan 1698/99, since it is placed so early in the year before half of page of births that would be earlier than that date. More likely, it means Jan 1697/98 and was recorded late. Source:Wilbour, Benjamin Franklin. Little Compton Families, p. 43, gives 24 Jun 1698 as the birth date for Elkanah, but given the data found here, it is too likely that he copied the date off the adjacent record.]

[in margin:] Jan'r: 97. Elkana Billings born
[According to the introduction, these records in the margin were copied there by Rev. John Danforth (ordained 28 Jun 1682) from the town records. Why this record was copied into the margin of this particular page is not clear, as the baptisms on this page are 1702 and not for the Billings family. No baptism for Elkanah seems listed anywhere. Baptisms for early 1698 occur on p. 209. This does provide some confirmation, though, that the published records are a correct interpretation of the original records.]
