The Identity of the Wife of Ambrose Clark of Middletown
There appears to be no direct proof that Ambrose Clark married Elizabeth, daughter of Lieutenant James and Elizabeth (Rockwell) Clark. James' probate occurred before this Elizabeth was married and, at any rate, named none of his children. However, factors which support this identification include the following:
- The widow of Ambrose died in 1779 at the age of 85. This age is consistent with Elizabeth's having been born in Middletown in 1694; further, she is the only Elizabeth Ward in the published Connecticut Vital Records identified as having been born anywhere near that time.
- Hope (Lamberton) (Ambrose) Herbert , grandmother of Ambrose Clark, married William Cheney of Middletown as her third husband. Her daughter, Abigail (Ambrose) (Clark) Williams was named in Cheney's will and she (Abigail) and her second husband, John Williams, were named Cheney's executors. The three surviving Clark children, Ambrose, Cheney and Eunice, were named as legatees in Cheney's will, being identified as the children of his deceased son-in-law John Clark.
- Joseph Rockwell, brother of Elizabeth Rockwell, this Elizabeth Ward's mother, participated in the inventory of Cheney's estate and was named one of the overseers thereof by Cheney. In November 1717, Cheney Clark chose this Joseph Rockwell to be his guardian. Rockwell also participated in the inventory of Lieutenant James Ward's estate in 1712.
- See Manwaring, Volume 2 for the probates of William Cheney and Lieutenant James Ward.
