Elizabeth Scott was born at Ladykirk in Berwickshire, where her father, Alexander Scott, was master gardener at Ladykirk House. She grew up at Ladykirk, although in 1881 she and her sister Mary Ann were visiting a George Horsley and his family at Tweedmouth in Northumberland. In 1889, Elizabeth married a John Cockburn at Ladykirk, but the following year she died aged just 24.
