Elizabeth Roper was baptised on 18th April 1852 at Tolpuddle in Dorset, daughter of Emily Roper, formerly Sturmey, and her husband Benjamin Roper, a gardener. Elizabeth appears in the 1861 census living with her parents and siblings in Tolpuddle. By the 1871 census Elizabeth had left home and was working as a domestic servant for a victualler (publican) in the county town of Dorchester, at 47 High East Street, one of the town's main thoroughfares. A couple of doors down from 47 High East Street there is an arch between numbers 44 and 45, leading to Greenings Court, where one of the residents in the 1871 census was a shoemaker called Alfred Hutchings, who was originally from Crewkerne in Somerset.
Elizabeth and Alfred would go on to marry later that year, back at Elizabeth's native Tolpuddle. Their first child was born at Charminster, just north of Dorchester, after which they returned to Dorchester, having several more children there. The 1881 census finds Elizabeth and Alfred living at 11 Grove Buildings, on the western side of Dorchester. In the late 1880s they moved to Charminster, settling in a three roomed cottage on Church Lane, where they appear in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
Alfred died in 1910, aged 69. Elizabeth appears alone in the cottage in Charminster in the 1911 census. She appears to have outlived Alfred by about 24 years, dying in 1934 in the Weymouth district, just south of Dorchester.

d. Elizabeth HUTCHINGS, March Quarter 1934, Weymouth Registration District, Volume 5a, page 397, aged 82 [1851/2]
This appears to be the most likely death for Elizabeth, being the only Elizabeth Hutchings death in Dorset of roughly the right age. Death certificate would need to be obtained to confirm.
