Elizabeth or Betsy Osborn was born on 30th June 1826 and baptised the following month at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire, daughter of a labourer called Stewart Osborn and his wife Mary. Elizabeth's father appears to have died in 1837. The 1841 census finds Elizabeth living with her mother and siblings at The Green in Totternhoe.
On Christmas Day 1845, aged 19, Elizabeth married Amos Kempson at Totternhoe. They went on to have eight children at Totternhoe between 1847 and 1864, although at least three died young. The 1851 census describes Elizabeth as a straw plaiter, whilst Amos was an agricultural labourer. The 1861 census specifies that the family were living at Lower End in Totternhoe.
By 1871 the family had moved to the neighbouring village of Stanbridge, where they lived on Totternhoe Road. Amos was by this time working as a straw dealer, whilst Elizabeth was described as 'domestic', although it is unclear whether this means she was principally engaged in domestic duties at home, or whether she was also employed as a domestic servant.
Amos died in 1879, aged 54. The 1881 census finds Elizabeth living at Houghton Regis and working as a straw plaiter. She had two apparently unrelated visitors staying with her on census night.
By 1891 Elizabeth had moved to Ivinghoe in Buckinghamshire, lodging at 6 Back Lane with another widow. Elizabeth's daughter Eliza lived with her husband in the same row of cottages. Elizabeth died in 1893, aged 66.

Although the birthplace of this Elizabeth is given as Ivinghoe, there is no evidence from the earlier censuses of an Elizabeth Kempson from Ivinghoe. At 10 Back Lane Elizabeth's daughter Eliza was living with her husband Edwin Rogers and their children.
