Elizabeth Moss was born on 17th February 1883 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat finisher named Kate Moss, formerly Dalton, and her husband James Moss, a timber yard labourer. Elizabeth appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at 28 Old Bedford Road in Luton. By 1901 the family was living at 33 York Street, and Elizabeth was working as a straw hat finisher. She was listed as 'Lizzie' which is presumably how she was known.

On 1st June 1903, aged twenty, she married Thomas Lewis, who was only seventeen when they married. They went on to have eight children between 1905 and 1915, although the four youngest children all died as infants, including twins in 1910. The 1911 census finds them living at 15 Cobden Street. Thomas was working as a straw hat blocker, whilst was Elizabeth was described as a straw hat trimmer, working at home. Their four surviving children were all living with them on census night.

At the outbreak of the Second World War Elizabeth and Thomas were living at 11 Bailey Street in Luton. Thomas was described as an unemployed hat steamer at the time, whilst Elizabeth was described as doing unpaid domestic duties.

Elizabeth and Thomas were married for 38 years. Thomas died in 1941, aged 56. Immediately before his death they were living at 45 Henry Street. Elizabeth survived him by seventeen years. Elizabeth died on 17th August 1958 at St Mary's Hospital in Luton, aged 75.
