Elizabeth Moss was baptised on 6th December 1840 at Caddington in Bedfordshire, the second child of an agricultural labourer named James Moss and his wife Susannah Puddephatt. The family appears to have lived at Cross, in the part of Caddington parish which at that time lay in Hertfordshire. Less than a month after Elizabeth's baptism, her grandmother Martha Moss died, aged 48. The following year the 1841 census finds Elizabeth living with her parents and older brother William, in the next household to her step-grandfather, Thomas Moss, Martha's widower. However, less than a month after that census was taken, her father James died, aged just 23, and before the year was out Elizabeth herself had died, having just turned one. She was buried at Caddington on 19th December 1841.
