Elizabeth Horn was born around 1839 at Dunstable in Bedfordshire, daughter of a bonnet sewer called Maria Horn, formerly Saunders, and her husband Henry Horn, a straw plait dealer. The 1841 census finds Elizabeth living with her parents and siblings on High Street in Dunstable. By 1851 the family had moved to the neighbouring town of Luton, where they lived on Princess Street. Elizabeth was also described as a bonnet sewer in 1851.
On 4th July 1860, Elizabeth married David Kempson. They went on to have thirteen children between 1861 and 1886, although at least three died young. Each census from 1861 to 1891 finds Elizabeth and David working in the straw hat industry and living in Luton with their children. Elizabeth's widowed father was also living with them in both 1861 and 1871.
Elizabeth died in 1892, aged 53. David survived her by about eighteen years, and remarried shortly after her death.
