Elizabeth Hayes Sakers, who taught kindergarten for three decades to Baltimore school children, died Tuesday at her Berlin home. She was 94.
Born Elizabeth Hayes in Baltimore, she was a 1925 graduate of Eastern High School and a 1929 graduate of Towson State Teachers College.
A longtime Govans resident, Mrs. Sakers taught kindergarten in Baltimore, ending her career with a 15-year stint at Roland Park Elementary School in the early 1970s. "She just had a unique ability with that age child, and patience," said her daughter Amy Elizabeth Sakers Curry of Berlin.
Mrs. Sakers taught in the Baltimore public schools for 31 years. She took off about 10 years in the middle of her career to raise her two children. She was married for 59 years to J. Wilbur "Bill" Sakers, a longtime worker for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Mr. Sakers died in 1994.
Mrs. Sakers lived in Baltimore until about two years ago and was a member of Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church. She moved from her Govans home to Berlin, where she lived with her daughter's family until her death. She enjoyed gardening and the ocean. She traveled in her retirement years, Mrs. Curry said.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Sakers is survived by a son, J. Lowell Sakers of Long Green, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
