Elizabeth Hartwell was baptised on 15th December 1771 at Adderbury in Oxfordshire, daughter of John Hartwell and his wife Mary. Elizabeth appears to have been one of at least seven children. Her father died in 1779. It is not clear when her mother died; there are plausible burials at Adderbury in both 1807 and 1817.

Elizabeth’s next sighting is on 25th April 1796, aged 24, when she married George Bastock at St Mary’s Church in the town of Warwick, about 24 miles north of Adderbury. He was four years younger than Elizabeth and from Warwick. Elizabeth and George stayed in Warwick after their marriage, having seven children baptised there between 1797 and 1813. George worked as a labourer and gardener. Their youngest daughter’s baptism in 1813 notes that the family lived on Saltisford, the main street out of Warwick to the north-west.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses both find Elizabeth and George living at Commercial Buildings on Saltisford.

Elizabeth died at the age of 85. She was buried on 29th April 1857 at St Mary’s Church in Warwick. George outlived her by less than five months.

Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the Elizabeth Hartwell who married George Bastock on the basis that it is in the parish she gave as her birthplace and around the time the ages quoted for her as an adult suggest that she was born. No evidence has been found to suggest that the Elizabeth baptised in 1771 died young or married at Adderbury.
