This is a short summary of the Hampton Indian Massacre:

While her husband was away she left her 1st born (only child at that time) with her parents and went to visit a neighbor. While she was gone, Some Tory & Cherokee Indians went to the Hampton home and massacred her father, mother, brother, Preston and her baby boy. They ransacked the home and kidnapped her nephew, John Bynum. From the woods, she witnessed the massacre and she and her friend road horses to Wood's Fort to get help. The Indians continued on to Preston's home and killed his 2 children there. His wife fled through the swamp and was found several days later in the woods. She never mentally recovered. Elizabeth's 5 brothers rode with troops to find the Indians. After a series of bloody conflicts, a treaty was made and John Bynum was returned.
