Elizabeth Ewen’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests she was born around 1784, and she indicated that she had been born in Sussex. Her first confirmed sighting is on 19th January 1806, when she married George Hammond at St Andrew’s Church in the city of Chichester. He was a widower with a young daughter from his first marriage. His first wife had been Ann Ewen, and an Elizabeth Ewen had been one of the witnesses to his first marriage – it is entirely possible therefore that Elizabeth was a relative of George’s first wife. Elizabeth and George went on to have another nine children together between 1807 and 1825, although their eldest appears to have died as a baby. All the children were baptised in Chichester, although in three different parishes within the city – St Andrew, St Peter the Great and St Pancras. George worked as a baker. George died in 1835, aged 54. The 1841 census finds Elizabeth living on The Hornet, the main street leading out of Chichester to the east. She was herself working as a baker by this time. Living with her were two of her sons as well as one of her stepdaughter’s sons. Her eldest son and his family were living in the neighbouring household. Elizabeth died in 1844. She was said to be 59 when she died. References
