Elizabeth Edwards was born on 1st February 1849 at the Westhampnett Union Workhouse in Sussex, daughter of Eliza Edwards. Eliza was only about 18 years old herself when Elizabeth was born. Elizabeth's father's name does not appear to have been recorded. The Westhampnett Union Workhouse served a wide rural area south-east of Chichester, including the parishes of Pagham and Sidlesham where Eliza was from.

Elizabeth went to live with her grandparents, John and Sarah Edwards in Sidlesham, where she appears in the 1851 census. Her mother Eliza was not living with them at the time of the census, being a servant to a postmaster in nearby Bognor.

Sadly, Elizabeth died when she was only six years old, dying at Sidlesham on 31st March 1855 of bilious fever. Her grandmother was informant for the death.
