DANIELL, Elizabeth, d. Samuell and Marie, [born] Apr. 9, 1681.
- Source:Emery, William M. Newell Ancestry, p. 71-72, quoted at length because it explains the problem well:
Robert Daniell had another son Joseph, who had a daughter Elizabeth, born March 8, 1678/9.
Samuel Daniell, the executor, had a daughter Elizabeth, born April 9, 1681.
Of these births there is no question, as both are of record. There are also records of the marriage of an Elizabeth Daniell to John McIntire April 8, 1701 (Reading, Mass., vital records), and of an Elizabeth Daniell to Joseph Mason in 1705. [Note: not stated, but Medfield vital records]
Which of the Elizabeth was daughter of Joseph, and which was the daughter of Samuel? Vital records do not tell us. Moses Grant Daniell, in a genealogy in the 'New England Historical and Genealogical Register', states that Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel, married Joseph Mason. The 'History of Medfield, Mass.', asserts that it was Joseph's daughter who married Joseph Mason. Both cannot be right. Both ignore a marriage of an Elizabeth to John McIntire. The present writer identifies the Elizabeth, wife of John McIntire, as the daughter of Joseph Daniell, largely for the reason that she was older than Samuel's daughter, and married first.
The author appears to be going against prevailing opinion, but no evidence can be found either way, and since secondary sources often copy from other secondary sources, there can no confidence in either conclusion. Joseph d. 1715 and his will mentions "his daughters" without naming them. Samuel d. 1697 and his probate also offers no clues. As Joseph was still living in Medfield in 1705, it may be his daughter that married in Medfield to Joseph Mason, while Samuel's daughter, being orphaned, is more likely to have relocated to Reading. But this speculation is probably no more conclusive than Emery's.
However, Suffolk Deed, Vol. 32:227: 16 Apr 1718: Ezra Morse of Dedham Yeoman & Mary his wife (one of the Daughters of Joseph Daniel of Medway) and Joseph mason of Medfield Yeoman and Elizabeth his Wife (another of the Daughter of Joseph Daniel) for £300 convey to Benj'a Gibson of Boston Glazier house and land in Boston [Note: will of Joseph Daniels leaves a house in Boston to "my daughters".]
By elimination, therefore, we presume the daughter of Samuel married John McIntire.
