Elizabeth Cox was born and baptised in 1869 in the parish of St Ewe, Cornwall, the youngest of six children of a gamekeeper named John Cox and his wife Sarah Fox. The family had only recently moved to St Ewe - all her elder siblings had been born at St Mellion. In St Ewe the family lived at Pengrugla, a hamlet adjoining the Heligan estate, which is presumably where John worked.
Elizabeth has yet to be researched after the 1891 census, when she was living at Pengrugla with her parents.
