Elizabeth Ann Cox was baptised on 11th March 1865 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, daughter of Elizabeth Cox, formerly Ward, and her husband Thomas Cox, a wheelwright. Young Elizabeth appears in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings in Barnack. The 1881 census finds Elizabeth visiting her great-aunt (her maternal grandmother's sister), Catherine Bescoby, in the nearby city of Peterborough.

Elizabeth's father died in 1884.

On 28th February 1888 Elizabeth married an innkeeper called Samuel Taylor Coulson at Barnack. He was about twenty years her senior, and from the village of South Kyme, over thirty miles north of Barnack, albeit close to the village of Great Hale, which is where Elizabeth's mother was from. After their marriage they settled in South Kyme, where Samuel ran the Tower Inn.

They had one daughter, Susan Elizabeth, born at South Kyme in 1890. The 1891 census find them living at an unspecified address in South Kyme, with Elizabeth's sister Catherine boarding with them and working as a servant, as well as two other boarders.

The 1901 census finds the family specifically listed at the Tower Inn. They had one servant living with them at this time. Samuel later recalled that the Tower Inn was demolished around 1907.

Back in Barnack, Elizabeth's mother died in 1906.

By 1911 Elizabeth, Samuel and their daughter were living at the Hume Arms, with two servants. This was a large building, described as having eleven rooms, and Samuel described himself as both a publican and farmer. Samuel ran the Hume Arms until the early 1920s, when he retired.

Elizabeth's daughter was married in the South Kyme area in 1921, then briefly went to live in Ireland, where Elizabeth's first grandson was born later in 1921 in County Monaghan. Elizabeth's daughter and her husband then returned to England, settling in the Peterborough area, where several more grandchildren followed in the later 1920s.

Elizabeth died on 25th March 1930 at the County Hospital in Lincoln, aged 65. She was buried back at South Kyme. Samuel died the following year.

   THE FUNERAL of Mrs. Elizabeth Coulson, who passed away in the Lincoln County Hospital on Tuesday took place yesterday.
