Elizabeth Colman was baptised on 20th January 1828 at Bere Ferrers in Devon, daughter of a miner named John Colman and his wife Elizabeth. The family's abode on her baptism record was given as St Hilary in Cornwall, some seventy miles or so to the west, although this was probably the clerk's way of recording the family's place of legal settlement - her siblings born earlier in the 1820s are similarly described and it seems unlikely that the family would have been regularly travelling between St Hilary and Bere Ferrers. Certainly Elizabeth always claimed to have been born at Bere Ferrers rather than anywhere else.

The 1841 census finds Elizabeth living at Frog Street in Bere Alston, the largest village in Bere Ferrers parish, where she was a servant.

In 1846, aged 18, Elizabeth married a shoemaker named John Drake. He was also from Bere Ferrers, but they married in the nearby town of Devonport, at Stoke Damerel parish church. After their marriage they returned to Bere Ferrers, where they lived on Pepper Street in Bere Alston in each census from 1851 to 1891. They appear to have had at least eight children together.

Elizabeth died in Plymouth in 1897, aged 69. John outlived her by sixteen years.

    d. Elizabeth DRAKE, December Quarter 1897, Plymouth Registration District, Volume 5b, page 165, aged 67 [1829/30]

Whilst this death is not in the Tavistock district which covered Bere Ferrers, there appears to be no other plausible death of an Elizabeth Drake between 1891 and 1901, when John was living alone, nor is there any other similarly aged Elizabeth Drake in Devon in the 1891 census who could be this death.
