Elizabeth Field Burrows was baptised on 22nd April 1849 at Willian in Hertfordshire, daughter of a charwoman called Elizabeth Burrows, formerly Field, and her husband John Burrows, a shoemaker. Young Elizabeth appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with her parents and siblings in Willian.
On 6th July 1867, aged eighteen, Elizabeth married James Worbey, an agricultural labourer from Hitchin, a couple of miles west of Willian. They married in Willian, but then moved to Hitchin where their first child was baptised in 1869. By 1871 they had returned to Willian, appearing in the census that year living on Baldock Road in the village. At this time Elizabeth was working as a straw plaiter. Elizabeth and James had nine children together between 1869 and 1888, although one died as a baby.
Each census from 1881 to 1901 finds the family living at 11 Lordship Cottages, a four-roomed house on the north side of the main road in the middle of Willian. Elizabeth's parents were living with them in the 1881 census.
Some time between 1901 and 1908 the family left Lordship Cottages and moved along the road to Bray Cottages, on Baldock Lane leading out of the village. Elizabeth was buried at Willian on 8th January 1908, aged about 58. James survived her by over twenty years.
