On this 14th day of December 1866 personally appeared Eliza Samples widow of Alexander Samples and the mother of Columbus P. Samples deceased who was a private in Company B, 1st Alabama Vidette Cavalry Volunteers after being sworn by me says on her oath that previous to her sons decease her husband was hung til he was dead by the Rebels on the 1st day of September 1863 also they burnt and destroyed most all of her property and her son Columbus P. Samples contributed to her support in the month of October ten dollars in money also in the month of November he gave her ten dollars. This was in the year of 1863 making twenty dollars which is all she received from him and that she had no property or any means of support while she was receiving the same and that she has no property as means of support at the present except about Thirty Dollars part of her sons wages which she has just received from the government. "Died at Nashville March 2, 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea".
STATE OF ALABAMA, COUNTY OF JACKSON
On this 4th day of June 1886, personally appeared before me, a Clerk of the Court of Record, in the County and State aforesaid Mrs. Eliza Samples, a resident of Stevenson, County of Jackson and State of Alabama, aged 38 years, who being duly sworn, makes the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress approved July 14, 1862: That she is the widow of Alexander Samples deceased, and mother of Columbus P. Samples who was a private in Company “B” commanded by George F. Allan, Captain, in the 1st Regiment of Alabama Independent Vidette Cavalry Volunteers, in the war of 1861, and who died in the service aforesaid, in Hospital, at Nashville in the State of Tennessee on or about the 15th day of March 1864, of sickness and disease contracted in the service aforesaid, and while in the line of his duty. That her said son, upon whom she was wholly or in part dependent for support, left no widow, or minor child under sixteen years of age; and that she was married to said Alexander Samples at Wills Valley, DeKalb County, in the State of Alabama, on or about the ___day of September 1844, by Mr. Bacon, a Justice of Peace, that she knows of no record evidence of said marriage; - that her said husbund was hung by Rebel Gurrillas on or about the first day of September 1863 and that she still remains a widow; that she has not in any way been engaged in, or aided or abetted the rebellion in the United States; and that she is not in the receipt of a pension under the second Section of the aforesaid act, or under any other act.
She hereby appoints W. C. Webb, os Stevenson, Alabama her lawful attorney, and authorizes him to present and prosecute this claim, and to receive and receipt for any orders or certificates that may be issued in satisfaction thereof. Signed Eliza Samples (her mark)
State of Alabama, Jackson County
On this 29th day of September 1866 personally appeared Eliza Samples, mother of Columbus Samples late private in Co, B, 1st Ala vidette Cav Vols Commanded by Captain George F. Allen. After being duly sworn say on her oath that she is the identical Eliza Samples who has applied for pension, No. 129181 and required to furnish the names dates of birth and place of residence of the children of her deceased husband at the time of his death under 4teen years of age. The following is a true statement of the same.
