    Born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Eliza was the daughter of John W. Cowan and Jane Eakin.

    Eliza married LeGrand Atwood on 21 February 1860 in Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee. He was a physician, and they were the parents of 6 children.

    LeGrand served in the Civil War as captain and surgeon in the 1st Regiment of Rifles, Missouri State Guard, under the command of General Sterling Price.

    He became the superintendent of the St. Louis Insane Hospital in 1886. Superintendent of the State Hospital for the Insane, #1, in Fulton, Callaway County, Missouri from 1891 through 1892. He was a faculty member at Beaumont Hospital Medical College and at the Marion-Sims Hospital College in St. Louis, Missouri.

    After Eliza's death, LeGrand served as the second mayor of Ferguson, Missouri in St. Louis County from 1897 to 1898.

    Eliza and LeGrand's oldest child, Helen, was president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. A son, LeGrand L. Atwood, was the fifth mayor of Ferguson from 1905 to 1907.

    Eliza died in 1895 at the age of 58 years, 2 months and 16 days. She was survived by her husband, who died in 1917.
