Kate Eliza Carrick's origins are unclear. She claimed to have been born in Winchester in Hampshire around the mid 1860s, and that her parents were Henry James Carrick and Mary Ann Kelly. On her marriage certificate, Henry's occupation is given as bootmaker, whereas her death certificate describes him as a fruit dealer. No obvious birth or baptism record has been found for her to support these claims, nor has a marriage for Henry James Carrick and Mary Ann Kelly been found in England. It would seem quite likely that Kate Eliza's first sighting is in the 1871 census as "Eliza Craddick" at the New Winchester Union Workhouse. She was described as a six year old scholar and there was a Mary A. Craddick with her who was eight years old. No evidence of these Craddick girls has been found in the birth registers or other censuses either.

By 1881, Kate Eliza seems to have been living with an uncle, William Carrick, and his family at 75 Eastgate Street. She was working as a domestic nurse at this time. It is perhaps worth noting that William's father's name was Henry, which was the name Kate Eliza gave for her father.

In 1884, when she was said to be 19 years old, Kate Eliza emigrated from England to Australia. She left Plymouth on 7th May 1884 on the 'Duke of Westminster', arriving at Cooktown in Queensland on 25th June, seven weeks later.

On 9th June 1890 she married Jesse Nickols, a farmer who had also emigrated from England in the 1880s. Kate Eliza was described as a domestic servant at the time. They married at the Salvation Army Barracks in Gympie. Between 1891 and 1907 they went on to have nine children together, although two died young.

The family moved around within Queensland. Electoral rolls show that from at least 1905 to 1912 the family lived at South Isis, from 1912 to 1917 at Goomeri, from 1922 to 1925 at Nikenbah, and from 1928 at Torquay Road in Pialba.

Jesse died on 24th October 1935, aged 76. Kate Eliza survived him by nearly 13 years. She died at St Stephen's Hospital in Maryborough on 26th August 1948. She was said to be 84 years old.
