Elijah's twin was Mary Ealeanor. He was apparently named after
a Doctor Elijah Hunt. James Baker Speer on 2 Aug 95 told this
story about Elijah: He hid his liquor in the hay loff of the
barn and had to sneak up there to drink.
Elijah Hunt Speer bought both his coffin and his tombstone many
years before his death and kept them under his bed. His
forthought was fortunate since the heavy rains at the time of
his death prevented anyone from traveling to town in order to
purchase a coffin.
Elijah's tombstone reads: "In memory of E.H. Speer who was born
March 14, 1828 and died Feb 12, 1908; Age 79 yrs 10 mo & 29
Dys." His tombstone displays the Masons symbol.
Company D was led by Captain S.J. Hester and was known as
Hester's Company. It was organized with men who largely
resided in the area south of Lowndesville and extending to the
Sharon-Mount Carmel area. Little has been found as to
casualties incurred by the company. The 7th Regiment was a part
of Kershaw's Brigade.
Elijah's unit was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on 2
May 1865. Elijah was not with his unit since he had been a POW
since 3 Jul 1863. Elijah was released from prision 10 Jun
1865.
Elijah was wounded and captured at Gettysburg. He spent the
rest of the war in the Fort Delaware prison.
Wounded in action at Gettysburg, Pa.
Absent, wounded at Gettysburg. Not heard from since.
Absent, missing at Gettysburg, Pa., 2 Jul 1863.
Absent. Prisoner Gettysburg, Pa., 2 Jul 1863.
Absent. Taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Pa., 2 Jul 1863.
Absent. Prisoner captured 2 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa.
Elijah was captured 3 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg and was confirmed
as a POW at Fort Henry, MD on 6 Jul 1863 (Fort McHenry, Md
Register No. 5, p. 304).
Elijah was captured 3 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg and was received
at Fort Delaware on 7 Jul 1863 (Fort Delaware, Delaware
Registar No. 1, page 112).
Elijah was released from prison on 10 Jun 1865, only one month
short of two years since capture. His Oath of Allegiance gives
his residence as Abbeville, SC; his complection as dark; his
hair as dark; his eyes as hazel; and his height as 5 feet, 11.5
inches. Elijah's signed his Oath of Allegiance as: Elijah H.
Speer (NA-Microfilm Roll 181, sheet 5).
The map shows the "E. Speer" house immediately south of the
Rocky River Presbyterian Church.
