Elijah William Buchanan was the son of Thomas and Anne (Butler) Buchanan. He was born in 1810 in Bourbon County, Kentucky and he had a twin brother, Elijah M Buchanan. His other siblings are Mary Ann (Joseph) Sitton; Elizabeth (Elijah) Hubbard; Nancy (Hiram) McDonald; Julie (Robert) Elsberry; William Henry (Mary) Buchanan. His mother died when he was 16 and his father married again to Dulcina and he had 2 half-sisters, Lucinda Ann (Thomas) Shipp and Martha Jane (Oratio) Linn; along with a half-brother Thomas Jefferson (Harriet) Buchanan.

Elijah was married on November 29, 1838 to Elizabeth Stallard, daughter of James and Rebecca (Stone) Stallard. They had two sons, James T. (1839-1840) and William Henry (1841-1907). After Elizabeth died in 1845, he married in 1947 to Louisa (Erwin) Shipp, widow of John R. Shipp. Louisa had two young sons, Benjamin Henry Shipp (1840-1919) and Anderson Thompson Shipp (1842-1916). Elijah and Louisa then had four children together- Olivia (James) Goodin (1848-1944); Elizabeth (1850-1852); Thomas (1857-?) and Susan Whitledge (1865-1925).

Elizabeth Stallard Buchanan and son James T are buried in Stallard Cemetery in near Troy, Lincoln Co., MO. This information was from The St. Louis Genealogical Society Quarterly, 13:4 (winter 1980), p. 126. Submitted to StLGS by members William L. Douglas Jr. and Merle M. Jackson.
This has the Stallard cemetery listed on a gravel road west of Troy off of Hwy V, in a field.
The Stallard Cemetery is possibly the same cemetery that is now known as Downing Cemetery, as the directions are exactly the same.
