It is not certain who his parents were. Someone has claimed that his father was Isaac Ice. However, in 1850[1], Elihu was living in the household of Isaac's sister-in-law Catherine Eve (Unknown) (Ice) Paden, who had remarried since Isaac's brother died, and in 1860[2], Elihu was living in the household of Catherine's son George Ice. This would suggest a closer connection with the George and Catherine Eve Ice family. Possibly Elihu was an illegitimate son of one of their daughters.
