Louise McLain Shambaugh has the following Civil War Record: Invalid Applicateion 8454, cert. 89489, Co. C, 7th Reg. MI. commanded by Capt. Baxter. Claime disability due to chronic diarrhea, respiratory disease of the lungs and of the heart, and injury of the right eye resulting in loss of sight of same. While at Bolivar Heights, near Harper's Ferry, ca March 18, 1862, he had been relieved by relief guard and had just laid down to rest when a musket gun was knocked down and the hammer of the gun struck him in the right eye. 5'6", wt. 125, lt. complexion, blue eyes, brown hair at age 43, he prematurely aged and became debilitated and emaciated. When Ira died, Eli lived in Aigner, Bridgewater Twp., Williams County, Ohio. Salt Lake City, Family History Center. Film #0913794 item 1. Record of Vetrans Graves 1859- 1972, Williams Co, Ohio. " Eli McLain d. 10 April 1895." From the book The Hills of Home it states that Ely died a widower.

Brooks from Quincy, Lena way County, Mich. Marriage 22 July 1872 at Quincy, Michigan." The IGI indicates that the wife's name was Rebecca M. Palmateer, and the county of marriage was Branch.
