    Entertainment critic. For more than 40 years, he was drama critic for the Los Angeles Times. His career of reviewing plays and films spanned the years when Hollywood was in its infancy on through the Golden Age and beyond. He was a fixture at Hollywood film premieres and in 1957 was awarded a Golden Globe Award, the first person outside the film industry ever to be so honored. His mother was a well known Southland socialite, his wife Elza was a writer and radio broadcaster and a son, William, is a well known character actor.
