Edward Willoughby's origins are not known. His first confirmed sighting is on 3rd April 1796, when he married Abigail Hornet at St Thomas's church in Southwark, in the southern suburbs of London. They went on to have two daughters together: Mary in 1797 and Charlotte in 1799. Mary's baptism described Edward as a merchant's clerk, whilst Charlotte's describes him as a book keeper. In 1803, Edward was a witness to the marriage of Abigail's brother Joseph, who also married at St Thomas's in Southwark.

Edward appears to have died in 1806, being buried on 29th April 1806 at St Olave's church in Southwark, where both his daughters had been baptised. Abigail outlived him by nearly 44 years, and remarried in 1808.
