Edward R. Seaver, an engineer from South Reading, MA, enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on 29 December 1864 at age 18. He enlisted in Company E, 1st Battalion Cavalry Regiment, Massachusetts, on 2 January 1865. He was mustered out of the same unit on 30 June 1865 ("Military Records of Individual Civil War Soldiers," Historical Data Systems, Provo UT, accessed at "American Civil War Soldiers" database on www.ancestry.com).

In the 1900 US census, the Edward R. Seaver family resided on Crescent Street in East Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The household included Edward R. Seaver (white, male, born Aug 1847, age 52, married 22 years, born MA, father born NH, mother born ME, a farmer), wife Kate E. Seaver (white, female, born Oct 1858, age 41, married 22 years, born NH) and son James R. Seaver (white, male, born May 1880, age 20, single, born MA, father born MA, mother born NH) (National Archives Microfilm Series T623, Roll 674, ED 1122, Sheet 3, Line 100).

In the 1910 US Census, Edward R. Seaver (head, male, white, age 62, single, born MA, father born NH, mother born ME, a farmer, works in poultry farm, own account, owns farm free of mortgage) and Elizabeth L.
