Name: Edward Thompson Peery Birth: 22 JAN 1800 in Tazewell Co., Virginia Death: 28 NOV 1864 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri Burial: Union Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri Note: At the death of his parents in childhood, Edward T. Peery and his brother Thomas were "bound out" to learn the tanner's trade. They disliked it, and ran away. E. T. Peery became a Methodist minister, teacher, and circuit rider among the Shawnee, Caw, Delaware, and Pottawatomi Indians. In his diary he wrote of his impressions on his itinerary around the Fort Scott, Kansas area. His wife also taught at the Shawnee Indian Mission. A photograph of her can be seen at the Shawnee Indian Mission. In April of 1830, Daniel Morgan Boone, the son of the famed frontiersman Daniel Boone, sent a letter from Fort Osage to his brother-in-law, Rev. Alexander McAlister, encouraging the establishment of a mission to the Indians of Kansas. In response, Rev. McAlister urged the Jesse Greene, the presiding Elder of the Methodists, to secure the Government funding for a school among the Caw Indians. The Shawnee Indian chief, Chief Fish, also petitioned the Indian Agency for the establishment of a mission among the Shawnee for the education of their children. On September 30, 1831, the Missouri Methodist Conference voted to follow these suggestions and formed a missionary society to establish a mission for both the Caw and Shawnee Indians. The appointed Rev. Thomas Johnson to the Shawnee Mission and Rev. William Johnson, Rev. T. Johnson's younger cousin, to the Kansas (Caw) Mission. In 1831, Rev. Thomas Johnson established the Shawnee Indian Mission and School. The original school, completed in the spring of 1831, was a two story log structure built near what is now Turner in Wyandott County, Kansas. In 1832, Rev. Edward T. Peery was appointed to the Shawnee Indian mission and school. E. T. Peery's younger cousin, Rev. John T. Peery, accompanied Rev. William Johnson in missionary work among the Delaware Indians. Rev. E. T. Peery was also listed among those who labored among the Delaware Indians. In 1833, E.T.Peery was elected president of the Missionary Society of the M.E. church for the Indian Mission District (recording Stewards Book for the Shawnee Mission, MSS. Dept., K.S.H.S.).. In 1838, the Missouri Conference voted to establish a central labor school for the tribes in the region. The new site for the mission was located about six miles from the mouth of the Kansas River along the California Road, also known as the Sante Fe and Oregon Trail. This site is the present Shawnee Indian Mission. Rev. E. T. Peery and his wife served as a teachers. In 1844, he was the Superintendent of the Shawnee Indian Mission and served until 1847. During 1847/48, Rev. E. T. Peery carried on missionary work among the Pottawatomi Indians at the mission established at what is now Ossawatomie, Pottawatomi County, Kansas. In 1848, the Peery's moved to Westport Landing. The family lived at Ninth and Harrison for a time and later moved to the old Peery home at Twelfth and Prospect Avenue. In 1858, Edward T. Peery was one of the original trustees who helped to incorporate the Union cemetery in Kansas City. He is buried there beside his wife, Mary S. Peery, and several of his children.
