Edward William Hutchings was baptised on 29th August 1841 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of a shepherd named James Hoare Hutchings and his wife Mary Ann. Edward appears to have been the second of three children. He appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings in the hamlet of Woolminstone in the rural part of Crewkerne parish, away from the town itself.

Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family left Crewkerne and moved fifteen miles to the west to Churchstanton on the Devon / Somerset border (it was then in Devon but has subsequently transferred to Devon). The 1861 census finds the family living at the former New Inn public house in the hamlet of Acombe in Churchstanton. Edward at this time was described as a "carter having care of horses".

Edward's younger brother James died in 1867 and his father James died in 1869.

Edward was married on 21st March 1871 at Churchstanton to Mary Coles. The 1871 census a couple of weeks later finds Edward, Mary and Edward's widowed mother living at Beerhill Cottage in Churchstanton, with Edward working as a carpenter.

Edward and Mary appear to have had four children together. Edward's mother lived with them until her death. They all appear together in Churchstanton again in the 1881 census in the hamlet of Stapley. Some time between 1881 and 1890 the family moved about seven miles north west from Churchstanton to the town of Wellington. Edward's mother Mary Ann died there in 1890, but was buried back at Churchstanton.

The 1891 census finds Edward and Mary living at 55 Springfield Road in Wellington with their three sons. Edward was described as both a carpenter and wheelwright on this occasion.

Edward died in 1897, aged 56. He was buried back at Churchstanton on 25th November 1897.
