Edward Gray was born on 4th September 1713 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, son of Grace Gray, formerly Pearson, and her husband William Gray, a farmer.

In 1715, when Edward was less than two years old, his father died. Later that same year his mother married again, with a James Onn becoming Edward's stepfather. James Onn then died in 1717, and in 1718 Edward's mother married for a third time, with a Samuel Major becoming Edward's second stepfather.

As a young man, Edward became a servant. However, he died when he was only 22 years old, being buried at Heckington on 23rd December 1735. His mother survived him.
