    The Paynes were here early and settled on Stewarts Creek. It is not known which of the Payne settlers was Edmond's father. He married Rachel Williams and they had a sizeable family of children, of whom some appear to have died in infancy. Rachel died in the 1840s and he remarried Elizabeth Snow in Surry Co., N.C. in 1848. There were four children by the second marriage.
