Edith Dorothy Higgins was born on 18th June 1888 at Walthamstow in Essex, daughter of a caterer named Daniel Higgins and his wife Sarah. Edith Dorothy was generally known as Dora. She appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at 55 Clarendon Road in Walthamstow. By 1901 the family had moved to Farnborough in Hampshire, where they lived in the grounds of the Ramillies Barracks and her father was described as a 'messman', presumably catering to the army there.
By 1911 Dora was working as a teacher in London, and she was lodging at 87 Sutherland Avenue in Paddington. Her landlady there was Margaret Sweeney, who had a son called Stephen, who worked as a railway clerk. Dora and Stephen were married in 1918 back in Farnborough. They had one daughter, Margaret Mary, in 1920.
At the outbreak of the Second World War the family was living at 72 Hanover Road in Willesden.
By the mid 1950s the family had moved to Caversham in Reading, living at 2 Matlock Road. They were living there when Dora died on 16th October 1954, aged 66. Stephen survived her by just over eleven years.
