From the Osage County Chronicle, 3/6/1884, pg. 5, col. 3:
"Death's Cruel Work --- Mrs. L. J. Riggs, of Prairie Center, was a caller at the Chronicle office last Friday. She informed us of the recent death, from dyphtheria, of three of her grandchildren at Harveyville.
The first death was that of Earl Miller, aged three years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orsan Miller.
On Thursday the 21st inst., Mr. and Mrs. Miller lost their little daughter Nellie, aged 11 months.
On Saturday, the 23rd, Blanchard, aged 11 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Symes, died. The remains of each were interred in the Harveyville cemetery. They were bright, interesting children, and will be sadly missed by the afflicted parents, to whom we tender our sincere sympathy."
