    Orlan Wells, Clerk of District Is Taken By Death

    Rites to Be Held Friday, 2:30 p.m., Court House Closes.

    Orlan Wells, 56, clerk of the district court for Lucas county since 1939, died at his home here Tuesday at 3:30 a.m. He had been ill for several months.

    Services are to be at the Methodist church Friday at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. Leonard Fardon, assisted by the Rev. W. A. Samp, officiating. The Miley Funeral Home will be in charge. Burial will be in the Chariton cemetery.

    Born in Lucas county, he attended rural school and was a graduate of Chariton high school. He is a member of the Gospel Center church and the Knights of Pythias lodge.

    His first wife, Miss Mabel Byers of Belinda, died in 1936. In 1941 he married Miss Clara Dillman of Corydon, who survives. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Emerson F. wells of Chariton; the children of his first marriage, Addison Wells of Minneapolis, Dean Wells of Los Angeles, Thayne Wells of Chariton, Misses Betty and Patty Wells at home and Donald Wells, University of Iowa student; four brothers, Paul of Cushing, Varian of Russel, Norman of Silvertown, Colo., and Hugh of Clarinda; a sister, Miss Gail Wells, Chariton teacher; and three grandchildren.

    A son, Vernon, was killed overseas in World War II. His father, the late Judge Emerson F. Wells, died several years ago.

    Closes

    The Lucas county court house will close at noon Friday, Sept. 30, and will remain closed for the rest of the day out of respect to the late clerk of the district court and to allow employees to attend the services.

    Orlan Wells - Prior to his election as clerk of courts, Wells was a Lucas county farmer. The office he holds was once held by his fathert he late Judge E. S. Wells. He has sent three sons into service in the present war--one to the Navy, one to the Army and one to the Marines. The marine, Sgt. Vernon Wells, was killed in action last December. It is believed he lost his life in the invasion of Tarawa.

    Mr. Orlan Wells and Miss Mabel Byers, both members of the senior class of the Chariton high school, were married a few days ago in Albia at the home of the groom's aunt, Mrs. Newman, the M. E. pastor at that place performing the ceremony. The young couple had expected to keep the matter a secret until school was over, but the news leaked out and they are now receiving the congratulations of their friends.. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Wells, of this city, and the bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Byers, of English township, both being high respected families.
