News-Gazette Obituary

Dwight Eugene Yockey, 86, of Monticello, formerly of Rushville, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday (May 19, 2015) in the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello.

Dwight was born on Feb. 17, 1929 in Monticello, the son of Cecil Bond and Mary Olive Nisson Yockey. He graduated from Bement High School in the Class of 1947. Dwight continued his education at the University of Illinois, where he earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture.

He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Alaska.

He married Sheila M. Gallivan of Ivesdale on Sept. 17, 1955. He is survived by his wife; sons, John (Diane) Yockey, Patrick (Sherry) Yockey, Michael (Mary) Yockey and Louis (Sarah) Yockey; daughter, Mary Yockey (Thaddeus) Bales; brothers, Raymond (Alice) Yockey and Jim (Judy) Yockey; brother-in-law, William (Elizabeth) Gallivan and fourteen grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Cecil Yockey; his parents, Cecil and Mary Yockey; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Catherine Gallivan; his brother-in-law, Patrick T. Gallivan and sister-in-law, Catherine Gallivan Weaver.

Dwight worked in the agriculture industry throughout his lifetime. He moved to Rushville in 1964 with his wife and children and began his career with USDA Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) until his retirement in 1989.

Dwight was an engaged community member and volunteered for his church, St. Rose Catholic Church at OpenStreetMap, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, Food Basket, Meals on Wheels, RHS music and athletic boosters, 4-H Leader, and the Adult Literacy program where he helped numerous people learn the joy of reading.
