  2.   This man was the son of Dorsey Pentecost. Here I will call him Dorsey Pentecost Jr. although I don't know whether he ever used that suffix. This man's brother Joseph Pentecost had a son who was also named Dorsey Pentecost. On many records, he is shown as Dorsey B. Pentecost (however, nowhere in the records does the middle name Baird appear).

In other words, Dorsey Jr. was the uncle of Dorsey B. They had somewhat similar life spans and were apparently born in the same county. It is very difficult to determine which record is for which of these men, and many, many Ancestry trees have confused the two, often ending up with obviously self-contradictory profiles.

    Briefly:

Dorsey Pentecost Jr. was born around 1775. He married Ruth Swearingen. His death date is not known.

Dorsey B. Pentecost was born around 1795. He married Sarah W. Wood (in Ohio). He died in Ohio around 1847.

    Evidence:

Both of Dorsey Pentecost Sr.'s sons are mentioned in The History of Washington County. (Not a primary source, of course.)

Dorsey Jr. appears on the 1800 and 1810 censuses for Strabane Township in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1830, Ruth's father, John Swearingen, wrote his will and referred to his daughter "Ruth Pentecost wife of Dorsey Pentecost" which suggests that both were still alive.

Dorsey B. has not been found on a Pennsylvania census, but he was a lawyer like his father and we know he was admitted to the Washington County Bar in 1823. Ten years later he married Sarah W. Wood in Jefferson County, Ohio. In 1840 he is found on the census of the adjacent Columbiana County. In 1847 his will was probated. The will does not appear to be on file at Ancestry but there are over 60 pages of documents, including at least one that identifies his heirs as the widow Sarah and two minor children.

These are obviously two different men because Dorsey B. was too young to be shown on the 1800 census (and Dorsey Sr. was already dead).

If no one objects, I will correct this profile, add sources, and create the profile for Joseph Pentecost's son.
