    INDIANAPOLIS ? Dorothy J. Hammerling, 84, died July 26, 2006, at St. Vincent Hospice.
    She was born June 25, 1922, in Terre Haute, the daughter of James M. and Mary Ethel (Hanley) Propst.
    On Oct. 9, 1944, Dorothy married John B. Hammerling.
    Following graduation from Indiana State Teachers College, Dorothy began teaching elementary school students at Otter Creek School in Terre Haute and, later, in Pendleton, Ind. Her career in education lasted over 30 years, taking her to IPS schools 105, 60 and 48. Most recently, she was an elementary school teacher at Oaklandon Grade School in the Lawrence Township School System; retiring in 1987.
    Her memberships include Kappa Sorority at Indiana State University; Tri Kappa Sorority; Job?s Daughters; Girl?s Athletic Association; and Indiana State Teachers? Association.
    Survivors include three sons, Doug Hammerling and David Hammerling, both of Indianapolis, and John Hammerling of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; two grandchildren, Susan Hammerling Diesu of Eatonton, Ga., and Lisa Hammerling of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; two great-nieces, Lynn (Patton) Hollaway of Pittsboro and Leigh (Patton) Roseman of Brownsburg; and a nephew, James L. Patton.
    Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, James M. and Mary Ethel (Hanley) Propst; her husband, John B. Hammerling, who died in 1974; a son, James Hammerling; and a sister, Mildred Patton.
    Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery, 7500 N. Clinton St., Terre Haute.
    Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
    Arrangements have been entrusted to Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Christmas Benevolence Fund at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46260, or to the Indiana State University Alumni Association, 200 N. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47809-9989.
