Dorcas Meagre's origins have yet to be established. It is quite possible that she was the Dorcas Meager baptised at Benington in Hertfordshire in 1686, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Dorcas's first sighting is in 1716 when she married a John Chapman at Little Hadham in Hertfordshire. At the time of their marriage John was described as being of Ardeley. After their marriage they settled at Benington, just south of Ardeley. Dorcas and John had three children baptised at Benington: Lydia in 1717, Dorcas in 1719 and Mary in 1721. John was a yeoman.

Dorcas was buried at Benington on 23rd June 1726. John survived her by just over a year.
