MATHEWSON, June E., age 95, of Dayton, OH, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023. June was born on September 6, 1927 in Baraboo, WI, to the late James and Iora Schilstra. She graduated from Baraboo High School before attending college. While living in Madison, WI, June met and fell in love with her future husband, Donald Mathewson. They were married on June 30, 1951, and moved several times over the years for Don’s sales career. When Don retired they moved to Anderson, SC, where they had a home on Lake Hamlin. The couple eventually relocated to Destin, FL where they especially loved walking the beach as much as possible. While June and Don never had children of their own they had an impressive “adopted” family all over the country, whom they cherished spending time with. They adored children, and Don was even well known for playing Santa during the holidays (to the delight of numerous children), wearing a Santa suit expertly handmade by June, who was an accomplished seamstress. June enjoyed card games of any sort, especially bridge and rummy. After Don’s passing in 2001, June decided to spend more time in Dayton where they had lived twice previously, eventually making Dayton her full-time home. Her determined and kind personality will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
June was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Donald B. Mathewson; sister, Elizabeth Schilstra; brother, Curtis James Schilstra; and affectionate companion, Tom Wilson, (Deceased 2014 of Dayton, OH), and four-legged friends Mandy and Rags.
June is survived by a collection of individuals known as honorary nieces and nephews that she and Don befriended through their travels. Jay and Lola Emmons fulfilled Don’s request to watch over and care for June after his passing. She is also survived by Jenny and Greg Karpinsky, who were among the “adopted children” and by their children, Ben, Kerry and Matthew (named for and born on June’s 77th birthday).
A private (per her request) graveside service will be held at Miami Valley Memory Gardens Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Ohio Valley Hospice.
