Donald L. Beals Jr. died at the age of two. He contacted menenjitis and died at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI.

This was a horrible time for my mother. She told how she would walk to the hospital to see (Skippy) and each step was so hard. It broke her heart of see him lying there. She told how his fever was so high and his little face had a squint to it. Mom was sure he was in pain, that his head hurt him. She was told at the time that he would never be alright. His temperature had raged so high that if he did live, he would be pretty much a vegetable (whatever that meant at the time) but I'm sure it meant that his brain had been damaged. Mom told us that at one point she couldn't bear it any longer and prayed that god would take him. The next morning she went to the hospital and as she climbed the steps to the floor he was on, she wasn't sure she would make it, each step was so heavy, her dread was so great, she didn't want to see her little boy suffer anymore. Skippy was dead when she got to his room.

Mom told us later that after his death, she would go outside to call Tonya in and would call his name too, only to realize he couldn't come in anymore.
