DESPINA A. VALAVANIS, 91, of Charleston, formerly of Huntington, died Monday, January 24, 2005, in Oak Ridge Center, Charleston. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2005, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Huntington, by Father Mark Elliott and Father David Shaw. Interment will follow in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. Despina was born April 21, 1913, in Greece, a daughter of the late Constantine and Paraskevi Tsolakis Arvanites. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Valavanis and a sister, Sophia Fotos. Mrs. Valavanis was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church for more than 50 years and also of St. John's Greek Orthodox Church in Charleston. She was a member of the Philoptohos Society, former member of the Beverly Hills Woman's Club, attended the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church Circle, a one time member of the Kiwanis Queens and was a member of the International Club of Huntington. She is survived by four daughters, Mary Theurer and her husband Kurt of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Freda Valavanis of Charleston, Artemis Wilhour and her husband Jim of Fredericksburg, Va., and Christine Valavanis of Cleveland, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher Theurer and Sylvia Harding; three great-grandchildren, Steven and Candace Harding and Kristin Theurer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 701 11th. Ave. Huntington, WV 25701. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with the Trisagion offered at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2005, at Klingel Carpenter Mortuary.
