He graduated from Cowley High School in Cowley, Wyoming and then attended the University of Wyoming majoring in Business. In 1951 he began his business career working at Big Horn Canning Company. This company was founded in 1925 by Dee Ray’s father, Ren Peterson and Uncle, Rob Peterson. Dee Ray was serving as President of the Canning Factory at the time it was sold to Portland Canning Company in 1969. When the plant closed in 1970, Dee Ray began wholesaling office supplies to retail stores throughout northwest Wyoming and south-central Montana. By 1976, the business had begun retailing office supplies and office equipment to businesses in northwestern Wyoming. At the time of his passing in July 2000, The Office Shop Inc. had grown to 20 employees and was serving northwest and Central Wyoming from two locations.
