    PALM DESERT, Calif., - Dean A. Proffitt, 76, who formerly operated Proffitt's Department Stores in the Twin Cities, died Thursday Nov. 15, as a result of a car-bicycle accident in Palm Desert.

    Proffitt was born Nov. 30, 1907, in Centralia, and moved to Palm Desert some six years ago from Olympia. He operated family department stores in Centralia, Chehalis, Olympia and Longview for a total of 45 years. Proffitt belonged to the First Christian Church of Olympia; Centralia Chapter 14, Order of Eastern Star; Rotary Club of Palm Desert; Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; Afifi Shrine of Tacoma; and 23rd Degree Scottish Rite of Olympia. Proffitt had been a member of Centralia Chapter 63, F. and A.M. for more than 50 years.

    Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Maxine, at home; two sons, Dean A. Proffitt, II of Centralia, and Joseph Lee Proffitt of Lacey; seven grandchildren; six g-grandchildren; and a brother, Lehman Proffitt of Centralia.

    A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Olympic Memorial Gardens Chapel, Tumwater, with burial to follow at Olympic Memorial Gardens.
